289 special oil?

Postby Stubborn3 » Sun Oct 19, 2014 9:43 pm

Just added a 1968 Mustang to the ford pile and was wondering about oil. It has the 289- I assume flat tappet cam. I've been running RP HPS in the Bronco for the extra magic phosphorus and zink... not sure if the same type stuff is needed. Doubt it even has 5k miles since the rebuild but the sticker in the windshield says it's time. Any recommendations on brand, weight, flavor is appreciated.

Looks like a clean little coupe.

You can run the VR1 oil if you want, there is no down side except the price.

I just run old dino oil in my old mustangs, they don't see many miles a year anymore.

Nice little ride!
Looks exactly like my old '68...
Did it come with slots???
Mine had the HiPO 289. Might want to take off the starter and run the numbers just to make sure. That might make a difference too?

It's 100% origional minus oil, tires, gaskets, and wiper blades. Grandma bought it new and Aunt has had it in her garage since Grandma passed. Still have the origional bill of sale and window sticker I think but thought about pulling the starter to see what I actually have.
