Bronco keeps dying

Postby Jar jar » Thu Mar 05, 2015 7:00 pm

so tonight I just replaced my ignition coil and starter solenoid to correct an issue I had with the bronco not starting. I took it for a little drive and when I was going up a hill the transmission down shifted then just shut off. I then tried to start it and it took a while but got it started. As soon as I put it in drive and gave it gas it died again. This happened a couple time but was able to get it home. What do you think the problem is? Mechanical Fuel pump? Fuel filter? (My fuel filter is clear and I see gas in it and no debris)

I am running a stock 302 with a lot of original parts. I have not changes these parts so I don't know how old things are. I have had this bronco for 2 years.

As a first guess, it sounds like fuel starvation. It's while since I've looked at a stock carb , but I'm pretty sure there is a fuel filter at the carb as well as your inline. Even if not stock, there may be another filter at the inlet.

Found this pic online.

Validate you have good fuel delivery, then move to other possible causes if that's not the issue.

I'm trying to remember if you are running a points dizzy, if so I'd check the gap and if you have the meter I'd check the dwell as well.

I believe it was points but I'm thinking lack of fuel.

So I looked at everything last night and found when I pulled off my distributor cap the Rotor contactor at the top of the cap was bent. (Not getting good contact) I have some play in the cap so that is not good. I think I need a new distributor. What would you guys recommend?
I bent it back and it ran just fine. I also adjusted the timing on the engine it was off.

So my bronco died again this past week when accelerating. I replaced the fuel pump and filters and it fixed the issue. It's running great I can now punch it again!
