Dana 44 ring gear engraving

Postby akaFrankCastle » Sat May 09, 2015 7:24 pm

So, tonight I finally got around to opening a Dana 44 I picked up several months ago. The good news it is a 4.09 ratio with Trac-Loc.

While checking things out on the inside, I found an "A202" hand engraved into the outside of the ring gear. Anyone have any idea what that might mean? I'm thinking it was done by a PO. I'm just curious if it sounds like it would be pertinent to the set up or something.

It was probably done during manufacturing to identify the pinion gear matched to it.

Yep usually you will find the same phase engraved on the pinion to signify the pair. Also I use to see a +2 or -1 hand engraved on the end of the pinion. This was to show the approximate pinion depth during setup, unfortunately it seems gear manufacturers have stopped doing this.

I have a feeling, based on the slop in this set up, that it's probably an OEM set up.
