Post ford 9"
Question for ya'll on the axle the bearing is pressed on is there a way to make sure that the bearing stays put. The reason I am asking I'm sitting on the side of the road with my axle hanging out a foot and the bearing and retainer are still in the axle tube
Any thoughts. Thanks Alex that is sitting on the side of the road waiting for a trailer

I've heard of people tack welding the retainer to the axle. Usually it isn't needed unless the shaft is worn from many prior bearing changes.

You can use loctite sleeve compound on the collar when it's being assembled.

Thanks . There are no groves in the axle. I will try anything. I'm just glad it happened to me and not the wife and kids. Good news it did not come all the way out.

That's pretty damn scary. Glad you made it safely to the side of the road with the correct side facing up. If it were me, I'd be looking for new seat covers now.

One way to swell the axle is center punch it all the way around in an even pattern where the keeper lands

Yes Zack heading to the pick a part. The officer wanted to give me a ticket for blocking traffic. So I jacked the rear up pushed the axle inn as far as it would go stuck it in four low and limped it over to the side

Ya Digger it was installed just like your pics, everything is still in the tube from the four bolt plate that holds everything in. I was taking the off ramp from Academy in the middle of the curve
I felt the ass end shift to the left didn't think any thing of it stopped at the light and when it turned green it would not move that's when I seen the right axle hanging out.

looks like I will be doing a rear disc brake conversion

They tried to ticket you for obstructing traffic? That's pretty stupid. And makes so much sense that they would stop to enforce something like that when you have idiots screaming down the interstate at 80+ mph high as a damn kite.

Yeah, dick move by that cop.

If the shaft is that worn, it should be replaced. I would start by buying a new bearing retaining ring and bearing. If it doesn't take considerable force to push on, then the axle needs repacement.

Tack welding would be the next option, although I would not recommend it. Axles are generally case-hardend to give them a strong bearing surface and welding will anneal that hardening.

Got it all fixed. No wear on the shaft. Used some loctite race stuff to help hold in place. I used the 20 ton press at work and it was a tight fit going on.
