Project sneak peak.

Postby landshark » Thu Feb 26, 2015 10:01 pm

Been working on my new project a bit - can't take credit for it all but I am customizing it a bit and doing some finish welding before i paint it...

Image

Wanted a 18" LED but a buddy of mine needed it and gave me the 2 stage 20" instead.. guess i will live with it ;)

Working on getting the new syntheic line and fairlead.. will be drilling one more hole up front to fit a standard 10" hawse fairlead.

Nice work Chris! Did you and a guy-who-shall-remain-nameless create this from scratch? I want to see what you have on the backside. Consider any hi-lift jacking points? A very nice looking bumper for sure!

Chris Hefty (heftyfabworks.com) created this from my requests.. I took a day off and finished it with him working on nuances and then brought it home and have been working on some other stuff in my garage to customize it to my use. I think I pretty much have the welding done and might try to heat up the garage this weekend to paint it.

I moved this way up on the front of the bronco to stop the snaggle tooth bumper I had on there before due to a 3" body lift - the bumper actually sits slightly higher than the frame horns so I added little ramps to the bottom to cover the frame. i will get some pics once its painted.

I didnt' think of adding any hi lift jack points on this and not sure where I would put them without being "snags". I could just use the d-rings if i had to.

The back side isn't that pretty as most of the welds are mine :)

There are two plates that slide into the frame where they bolt to a 1/2" plate welded into the frame itself. I added some horizontal braces to help with the lateral movement on the bumper mounting points but we are pretty sure the frame will break before the bumper.

Working on the Warn 8200 scope creep at the moment.. looking at replacing the solenoids with a solid state Albright solenoid (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPW-90-14452/) or the Warn unit which is a bit better but so is the price.. (http://www.amazon.com/WARN-34971-Contractor-FACTOR-Bracket/dp/B000OV6JKA)

plus the synthetic line.. and fairlead and and and ;)

Looks great! I'm not sure if you need to open up the hole for the winch line any, but if you want to use the plasma we can knock it out.

i had to close it up actually. The winch i have has a fairlead bolt spacing of 11 1/4" rather than the 10" standard.. i welded in a section so that I can run a standard 10" hawse style fairlead.

Project sneak peak.

Postby landshark » Sat Feb 28, 2015 10:46 pm

Got everything fitted, drilled and tested. Now onto primer. Paint tomorrow. A little concerned with air flow into the radiator but I will cross that bridge when the time comes.

Just an FYI that marker writing will bleed through the paint also as it did the primer.

i put another couple of coats on it after this picutre and you can't really see it. i think the paint should cover it as iam brushing it on then might hit the final coat with a light spray depending on the color. Trying the hammered paint.

Hammered paint covers a lot of that sort of thing. Or maybe just makes it blend in.

Final coat of hammered, didn't like that it was more of a grey - but already knew it would be

Image

So decided to make it black - final coat and set to cure for 5-6 days. Seems like it will hold up very well, wish it was warmer but got the garage to 62 F

Image

Hopefully get it mounted up toward the end of the week and then move on to the rear tire carrier ;)

When I first mounted the bumper the body was an inch higher on the passenger-side I had to remove almost half an inch of spacers in the body mount. To get it close. No idea why he had that many shims in the body mount.
