66 steering column wiring

Postby Gunnibronco » Sat Mar 07, 2015 1:17 pm

I'm helping a friend put a rebuilt steering column back in his 66 half cab. It wouldn't shift well, and he sent it to "some guy in Arizona" to have it rebuilt. Apparently the column had been broken & brazed together at both ends of the shift tube.

The guy put a new turn signal/horn cam in and the wires don't match the old colors. Also, the wiring on the "truck" side, doesn't match the colors on the wiring diagrams I've found.

Here is what we've got. I'm color blind, so my friend came up with these colors. He said some were tough to see, so if we are wrong, sorry. The truck side harness is original.

Column side:
Blue/white- heavy gauge/horn
Yellow- heavy gauge/horn
Green/red
Green
White/blue
Green/white
Blue
Orange

Truck side:
2 wire connector:
Yellow
Green

6 wire connector:
Yellow/blue
Green (2wires)
White/blue (2 wires)

Yellow
Green
Blue/white

Thanks

'66 has some weird colors. Here are some tips to remember.
The 2-pin connector goes to the rear brake/turn lights.
The heavy wires are for the horn and they should be located diagonally across the 6-pin connector.
The pins with 2 wires are the front turn/dash indicators.

Here is a chart from TBP that will help.

Thanks! That should get us on track.

Thanks again. A few of the wires didn't match up exactly to the guide, but we were able to get it all together.

I have a couple questions. I've never taken a close look at a 66.

Is there no emergency flashers? I only found one flasher relay under the dash, and no switch anywhere.

The turn signals flash very slowly. Would a new relay help that?

The brake light switch isn't on the pedal arm like my 74. Is it on the master cylinder? Its an old single reservoir with a screw top, kinda like a mason jar. There is a switch in the end of the MC. I thought that might be it.

Brake lights are indeed actuated by the master cylinder.

I think the hazards were an option in '66.

As for the turn flasher, if all the bulbs are working then a new flasher should do the trick.
