Wiring Gurus!

Postby mickphatmac » Fri Feb 26, 2016 12:08 pm

I'm swapping a 3 on the tree out of a '72 and replacing it with a '74-'77(?) automatic column.

Can anyone give me a wiring diagram from what was, to what it is now...

ie:
red = red/whitestripe
yellow = yellow/black stripe

I know the old one only has 8 wires and the new one 1 extra for the indicator light...which I also need to know exactly where that little sucker goes!

(please don't assume that I know anything about wiring and electricity, I won't be offended ;)
Here's the new one...

Here is the guide from painless. The column connections start on page 43, then there is a 66-73 diagram on page 80.

I hope this helps and the colors line up.

Thanks guys, still looking for more info.

Column indicator light goes with what hole? Or run 1 wire separate to light switch?

The easiest thing for you to do is run a 73 turn signal harness. The wiring should be same color as what you have and the connections will be the same. IIRC, pre-74 has female connections under dash and male on the switch wiring.

Your truck doesn't have a wire running to the under dash harness for column light. Late 72 would. You want light blue with red stripe. From the light switch or off the back of instrument cluster.

This is all from two posts of Vipers that I found on CB.com in 5 minutes of searching and copy/pasted to here in another 5 minutes while driving 75mph across Kansas in a 7900lb truck with another 7000lb of cargo and trailer in tow.

Hope it helps.

Wiring Gurus!

Postby akaFrankCastle » Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:34 pm

Now that I'm not dealing with driving...

Personally, I would stick with a '73 style turn signal switch housing and shift collar. This would be the unshrouded clear indicator, versus the later shrouded and illuminated version. Additionally, the '73 indicator is cast into the shift collar and not a plastic insert like the 74-77 versions.

This would give you the ability to utilize a '66-73 turn signal switch and harness and not have to figure out female to female connections. Not that it is THAT difficult. I just personally prefer more period correct. That's why when I finally finish the steering column in my "72" '73, it will have the '73 parts in it.

But, if you really want the illuminated shift indicator, I can understand that.

I need help in this area. My the blinkers on my right side are not working, front or back. Everything else works. Hazards, brakes, left side blinkers running lights, etc. I am thinking column switch.

I went to replace my column switch and found this? What is it and can I just cut it out and run the wires straight where they need to go and splice where they are not long enough?

My current column wires are running into the top of it. Then the wires coming out the bottom go to different places. A few to my dakota digital gauge, some to relays, etc. A kwik wiring harness was installed on this rig. I have a mix and match of kwik wire, old, stock, modified, etc.

Thank you in advance!

That's the column connector. You should keep it. Looks like there are at least a couple loose wires. One looks like column lighting and the other looks like hazard flasher power. Check all those connections before condemning the turn signal switch.

I'll add that you may want to ditch the crimp connections and replace with solder & heat shrink instead.

Ok, the previous diagrams are making more sense now. Appreciate it Viperwolf! I forgot to mention, the switch in my column is for a 73. My hazard switch is on the dash, as well as a switch for my back up lights. They work. I do not have anything to illuminate on my column. Does that explain the loose/cut wires? I can use the guide previously mentioned to wire it up correctly too?

Sodering/heat shrinking sounds like the way to go too kinder and hockeydad thank you! I do not have much to work with there. Do those connectors come with longer pigtails new?

The cam is broke too so that is another reason to change out the switch.

Re: Wiring Gurus!

Postby rlm18 » Mon Mar 28, 2016 5:34 pm

Well I finally got a chance to work on my column switch. I am not sure how but everything is working now.

In disassemble I found that only 6 of the 8 wires were being used. One was one of the wires for the horn and one was one of the center wires in the white piece.

I just reassembled it how I found it. I did have trouble soldering the different metals of the male connectors of the new column switch wires and the male pieces of the column connector so I just modified them, crimped them best I could and shrink wrapped them.

Any ideas on how everything is working but I have two spare wires? Also, are column connectors available to buy, or the metal male and female connectors inside it?
