96 Explorer 4R70W

I was installing my transmission (96 Explorer 4R70W) and dropped the pan to check oil condition and this was sitting in the pan what is itadn what's it purpose???? I really could see anywhere to attach it.

If I recall correctly it is a plug they use for the hole where the dipstick tube goes in. After the drivetrain has been mounted and the body put on, they insert the dipstick tube in the hole and that plug drops harmlessly into the pan

Which means that transmission has never been serviced
1977 Sport, 351w OBDII EFI motor, 4R70W auto, 4:88 gears, ARB lockers, 3.5" suspension, 33" tires.

Thanks Rod Crusher, good news it’s not a vital part bad news is the previous owner never had it serviced although the fluid was decent and no metal in the pan so I guess I’ll run it and see what happens.
