Thinking of adding a sound bar to the bronco

Postby ClayJ » Tue May 10, 2011 1:58 pm

I was reading all of the threads on classicbroncos.com about speakers.

Of all the things I saw, sound bars out of a jeep seemed to give the most bang for the buck because they can come with a built in amplifier and map lights.

Here's one that I found on ebay and think might fill my needs.

Does anyone have any better solutions?

I used VDP's 6 speaker setup.... built for Cheeps. $169 from Amazon but I tossed the speakers and put in a set of 5 1/4 Kickers based on feedback from other users. I have NOT wired it yet.

It did not fit inside of the outer bars of my Tom's Bronco Family Cage. I had the speaker bar before welding in the cage and could not find a way to make it fit.... the speaker bar is 2" too wide. So, I modified the brackets that come with the VDP unit and hung it below the tubes using weld-nuts in the upper tubes. It fits behind the front seat headrest and doesn't seem to take up any 'important' space.

The mounting bosses are tapped for M6x1.0 threads.

There are a few great options. One is the VDP may be like bickhart's:

The other is the wiper cover from BC that you may be able to make it yourself.

I used the stock speakers from a totaled Jeep Unlimited. They are a lot like the ones pictured at that website. They were mounted behind/above the driver & passenger in the Jeep, but I put them in the front, above the driver's/passenger's head. I rigged in a push button into each speaker enclosure, instead of trying to build a door switch. Great to add light, and ok sound, for cheap/free for me. They don't sit just right on my old Smittybuilt cage, I'll revamp the mounting when I pull the top the next time.

Sorry I don't have any pics, if you want let me know & I'll snap a few.

I like all the options people have shown. We used a used set of wake board tower boat speakers on Jonah's. They worked out great, look good and are weather resistant.

Whatever you do for sound, plan on 'more'. The VDP sound bar I used is only a foot or so from my ears, but with head-unit power I can't even hear it at highway speeds with the top off. I have quiet mufflers and medium tire roar. I'm adding an amps and another set of speakers / subs.

Anybody have the dimensions on the VDP soundbar? My cage is 38" inside, 42" outside.
74. A few different shades of yellow, black, and rust. 80's 302 w/ edelbrock carb. 80's 4spd on the floor w/ dana 20 twin stick. dana 44 in front and full floating 31 spline ford 9" rear with a detroit locker. 4.56 gearing. 5 1/2" of lift w/ 35" general grabbers.

I'd like to upgrade my system as well. The two 6x9's in the back is barely enough. But I think I'm ok with doing without a radio and having just a USB interface with an amp.
1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.
