UUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

Post by B.O.B. »

So my bronco wont start now. I can here the solenoid engaging but for some reason nothing at the starter. Also the radio does not work while its in run or accessories but when you turn the key to the left it turns on. First click to the right the efi fuel pump turns on but when you go to start nothing. I replaced the solenoid thinking it was a bad solenoid but nothing working.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks people.

Bad starter solenoid, test it by jumping the + battery cable to the small post closest to the + battery connection on the solenoid. I'm off tomorrow if you want me to come by, let me know.

Is the battery dead? Are the clamps all nasty and corroded?

Yes they are, But they are not as easy to find as they used to be. I remember calling around to alot of Part Stores to find one in stock, in town.

+1. I had a problem like it many yrs ago and replaced the solenoid and still no turning over. Removed the battery cables and found a slight ring of corrosion on one post. Cleaned the battery terminals and it turned right over. Many times it's overlooked even if the cables look clean.

Since my dad worked for Exide as the plant manager here when they manufactured batteries he would always get on me when he saw corroded terminals. Still does as a matter of fact.

Have a load test done on the battery, or easier yet, jump it and see if the bronco turns over. That should tell you if the battery is at fault or it's connections.

If you have a volt meter make sure you have voltage at the starter when cranking. May need a helper to crank while you test. If you have good voltage at the starter then your starter pooped out. The solenoid on the fender when cranking sends a good 12 volts to the starter with a decent battery. Definitely make your not losing voltage through corroded cables.

Well I think the battery is almost dead or the cables are fried. I will take the battery in tomorrow and get a check up and charge and see whats going on. The battery is only a year or two old so I doubt its bad but you never know.

It doesnt matter how old they are. If you have let it die there may be a chance that it never fully charged back up.

yes, and thus the reason I have a battery tender for every vehicle that does not get used regularly...

Had two costco battiers die on me a after a couple years in my tow rig. They were new enough for full warranty.
