Yea...did it with the gasket there. I noticed that the back bend in the pickup tube came very close to the tray so I added a washer to the stud to raise it up a bit. That decreased the pan to pickup even more. Right now I'm at 1/8" clearance so I need to gain 3/8".

How is the screen attached to the p/u? Easily removed, if not then I'd also bend the pickup tube. You won't lose any strength. Just keep the face of the p/u parallel to the bottom of the pan. If you can remove the screen easily then you could very easily cut the pickup tube off at the rect. box it's welded to, cut it to length and then you're ready...

BTW, looking good!!


The entire thing is one piece welded together. Even the screen is welded on.

Won't that kink the tube? I have never done something like that. Im a bit worried I'd trash it.

Remember, I need to gain 3/8" at least.

So basically, I heat up the bend with a torch until it's red hot, then apply pressure on the pickup until it's about right? Or do I remove it, heat it up, use some type of round metal to create another bend?

I can't have the pickup move left or right at all as it will hit the baffle in the pan.

I'm thinking the bend at the arrow here:

Yup, looks like that will work. Might have to bend it at the next radius also...the one closer to the screen p/u.

Worked perfectly and everything fits just right! I'm kidding;). Didn't try it yet.

I did find 3 defects in the oil pan though......the powder coat is chipping off in 2 places, one of the seams on the inside isn't welded completely, and there is a nice dent on the railing. For a $300 pan....that is just crap. Maybe I'll take it up to SpiderTrax and have them do me one up in aluminum:)

They make brushes for cleaning aquarium parts that would be perfect for cleaning out the inside of that tube. Petsmart may have them, otherwise any of the specialty aquarium places will.

Thanks guys. After talking with some others, I think I am going to go the cut and weld route. It would be quite difficult to get 3/8" from bending without affecting other clearances (pickup to tray etc.).

So who can cut and weld this thing for me? :)

Just fyi....I approached SpiderTrax yesterday about building a custom oil pan (since I'm having to exchange the Canton unit anyway) and they politely declined.

How about buying a 351W stock van pan or a Bronco house parts pan and making it purdy by powdercoating it? Just a thought... about .02 worth really... :) Is clearance an issue? Might not have to move the oil pickup...

The Canton pan is designed off a stock pan so the important clearances are the same. I sent back the pan/pickup/and dipstick for a refund. Not sure what I am going to do right now.

Hey Guys.....wanted to update all the loyal followers of my build. At this time I've sent the pickup, pan, and dipstick back to Summit Racing for a refund. Build is going to slow down a bit as I'm dealing with some fun unexpected homeowner-expenses right now. I'm to the point of needing to buy some expensive parts (heads etc). I'll post up when I get going again.

Airbur's 427W Build Thread

I've ordered up the standard 351w oil pan kit (pan/pickup/dipstick) and it should be here soon. Hoping this one fits with little to no mods. I'm wondering about using silicone on the gasket. The gasket I have is one piece rubber. Do I put sealant on both the block and the pan or just the block side like the valve covers?

Thanks. I've heard it's one of those "why not" options.....can't hurt anything apparently and is more leak protection. I think I'll put it on the block side and leave the pan alone. That will allow for easy pan removal if necessary.

id just do the corners by the rear main cap and the timing cover. Just a little dot in the corner and call it good.

you have to use silicone in each corner where the main caps meet up with the block. This is a common area for leaks as neither gaskets have the ability to seal 100% also the joint where the front timing cover meets. "A little dab will do ya" is the old term we always used. I used 3M trim adhesive to hold the gasket in place along the block surface also. May or may not need that depending on if the gasket is moving around or not.

Yea, that's the plan. I've already installed the timing cover and gasket. I used a thin film of silicone on both the block and cover for that.

Supposed to pick up the oil pan kit at the Bronco Hut's new shop tomorrow. I'll post up how the install goes.

Speaking of oil pans, what pan is needed for the 351 swap? I got my motor from a 96 F250, and I haven't done the reading to know what pan I'll need to do my swap. Will the F250 pan work, or should I be looking for another? No stroker for me.

Good question. I'm not sure which used oil pans will work. I'm using the new one that all the vendors carry for this swap...
