Thanks though!

AOD with 4r70W gears means no computer required.

Exactly...although I like to think of it as "AOD with 4R70W gears means no ability to control it with a computer:)"

And it's just that. another computer to trouble shoot when it gets wet and leaves you stranded. I'd rather have an AOD. Simple design. Why do you want to "control it". theres not much to do with it. Set the shift points.

Is there really no other advantage to the 4R70W? lighter? stronger? faster?

Could be worth rebuilding an AOD w/a gear set from a 5.4L 4R70W, get stronger gears & save the $500 for the Optishift. No Optishift, no adapter, no upgraded D20 parts, no D20 rebuild kit=almost free Atlas t-case. At least that's what I'm going to keep telling myself.

Sorry to hijack.

You can store different shift programs for high and low range driving and do some tricks with the converter clutch.

I dunno, sounds complicated. Then again, I like shifting my garbage truck transmission (NP435), so what do I know? Nothing like 2 foot throw from first to reverse.
