4 Kinds of heads, which one to run...

Post by landshark »

So i finally got around to pulling the engine apart knowing it was not the original engine and found out that its a 79 block with 351 heads on it..

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best head to run now on this engine, I will be doing a EFI swap onto a newly rebuilt engine later however that could be far into the year (even next winter) before that becomes a reality. So in the mean time I want to run the best parts that i can on this block.

I currently have the following heads...

73 econoline 302 - D3UE - AA / 63cc / Valve size 1.78/1.45? (very rough condition) has the original emission ports on the side.

    86 mustang 302 - E6SE - AA / 64cc? / Valve size 1.78/1.46 (newly rebuilt) Emission holes on the rear of the heads -
*not sure on the cc as these have been rebuilt and the heads have been plained - the cc size could be smaller, I was going to do a CC test and find out.

87 mustang 302 - E7TE -AA / 62cc / Valve size 1.78/1.48 (used) Emissions holes on the rear of the heads

75 truck 351 - D5TE - EB / 61cc / Valve size 1.78/1.46 (used but seem to run well) No emissions that I can find

if the E6SE's are close to the 61cc then I guess there is no reason not to run them however i was told i will have to replace the pushrods as my current ones will be too long..

From your list..I would stick with the 351 heads you have...just get them cleaned up and rebuilt.

Just for my own edjemeckation, what is the difference between the various heads? I'm guessing the 351w heads flow better, but why, and why are the e6se's junk?

They have small valves and a large bump In the exhaust port, flow poorly and are a smog head

The valves aren't any smaller than the others sorry bout that, but with the 64cc chamber they'll lower the compression= less power, the e7te's are decent about the only benefit of them over the early 351w heads is the valves should be plated valves in the e7te's, less prone to wear than the early stuff

if the e6's have been plained that should bring down the chamber size correct? I guess i should measure what size cc they actually are... i dont think they are stock anymore..

E7's are the best ones listed. I don't think the mid 70's 351w heads are any different than 302 heads other than the head bolt hole size.

yup thats what iam gathering. Going to have to check the head bolts i guess and go from there, iam leaning towards just running the 351 heads I pulled off a I know they fit without any issues.. but if i can gain a bit from the E7's and just refresh them then I would like to do that. EIther way iam refreshing one set or another...

I would go with the E7's as well, a very common head.
