i will be lucky to see this back in my garage before july.. good news is i will have plenty of things to do on the parts that need refurb in the mean time and plenty of space to do them in.

lucked out this weekend and found a early 97 explorer in a out of the way pick a part in Denver on sat and set to work to get what i needed..
unfortunately the weather moved in before i could get the timing cover, timing pointer and a few little bits i missed.

I tried to pull the clutch fan but wasn't having any luck and realized i didn't have a puller for the balancer either so gave up for now...

Anyway scored a set of gt40 heads as well on the same vehicle and dropped everything off today at MPG heads to get rebuilt and cleaned.

Have also decided to just use the 78 block and i'm going to take that in as well to get looked over, cleaned and refreshed.

Guess i will be putting the mustang stuff up for sale soon here as I have no need for it now.

I was told I needed a distributor with a steel gear in it for my Efi conversion. I understand that the steel gear is for the roller engine. If I don't go roller will I still need this particular distributor? Will it hurt to run it in my 78 block?

Roller cams are steel. Flat tappet cams are cast iron. Only use a steel gear on a steel cam. A steel gear used with a cast iron gear will wear out the cast iron quickly.

Making some progress on the engine rebuild. My father is here and hes an experienced engine guy so nice to have him here to help out!

Still working on the serp setup and a few other things on it.. valve covers are just temps until I can pick up a nice set of script covers...

next up is the upper intake, rebuilding the injectors and then figure out how to mount my smog pump.

currently rebuilding the injectors and awaiting the return of my dampner from getting rebalanced to 28oz







I need to finished stripping the upper intake and get that mocked up with the throttle body then I can sort out the sensors and order up my wire harness and get the pain out of the way ;)

Who did you use to rebalance the dampener? That's been the main thing stopping me from going serpentine. Also, who are you using for the wiring harness? I need to start writing my Christmas list.

Dampner dudes for the balancer ($50)

Ordering harness off eBay through Ron Francis who is building the rjm harness now I guess. They are responsive and have about a week turn around vs months. I have not ordered it as I don't have everything together.

working on it.. cleaned and rebuilt the injectors, cleaned and painted the upper intake fiddled with a few other things and got them on..

ordered up some EFI valve covers they should be here by the end of the week and then can get things more solid.

Oh got my balancer/dampner back from dampener dudes... 28oz now





Heres the clearance problem with a vacuum tube off the intake, Iam goign to wait and see how it is with the new covers. I might hack it off or thread then plug it off.. we will see...



PCV valve to plenium... i might try to reroute it but seeing how its on theback side of the engine i dont think it will matter too much..



Found a coil bracket that will work ;)




Working on the TB right now.. will probably finish cleaning it up and then paint it.. i just ordered a gasket for the IAC... i will probably use the mustang IAC and the explorer TPS... but i might try to use as much explorer stuff as well.. we will see.. its easy to swap out..

In addtion iam rebuilding the heater box using a new chevy motor and using the rebuild kit and new heater core from Zilla...







Just need some nice flat black paint and i can get that heater back together!

Stopped by the body/paint place to see how things were going, they are going to shoot the inside and engine tomorrow with epoxy and paint.. then the outside next week...

also they replaced the lower tail sections with the pieces off Zoso's bronco ;)

well i was bolting things back together, when the project went off the rails when the possibility of trading services for body/paint work crept in. I knew that it was a deal I would never trip into again and thats when it became a full restore. Sure it added thousands to the project but believe me many thousands were saved and it is being done right...

I had no intention of going this route and now that i have gone this way I of course had to have EFI ;)

Anyway believe me i have the large ticket items earmarked over the next few months for purchase, but the first thing going back in is the engine, transmissions, tc.. then Exterior and underbody - last thing is the interior...

It's easy to get over whelmed with things to do.. iam trying to take things one step at a time while working my way through the shelves of parts and refurbing things as i go.

In the end this will be a reliable and fun truck. Iam reusing anything I can along the way to keep it as close to original as possible, plus things were just in such good shape.

Im really worried about working in my garage with fresh paint.. but have paper and tape to try and protect it.. and going to try to get as much stuff onto the truck rather than sitting next to it to try and keep the damage at bay

Wow!! Really cool to see the inside of the old "Dales Rod and Custom" shop again!. That is where I had my 2nd bronco painted. it was the yellow one with purple scallops I posted pics of looking for it.

Its looking REALLY good. I cant wait to see it when its done

those EFI covers are great, wish they made them in the Bronco script version

I see you are using the Explorer heater tubes.........I will see if I can find my receipt for the formed heater hoses I used. They turned out nice.

Meanwhile, we are anxiously waiting pics of the new paint.

ya i would have loved the bronco script covers for sure.. but got a decent deal on these off ebay with seals and fancy chrome hold downs.. i polished up a bit so they look good but that intake covers almost everything in there so the "racing" part wont really bother me too much ;)

that would be great i was looking at the heater core lines coming out of the firewall.. the replacement core i got i noticed the lines are a little longer and was wondering if i could bend them slightly toward the engine.. might help things clear that wheel apron...

the truck should be ready next week I believe.. they were really close last week to doing the inside and engine.. i will be heading down to check on it friday.

looking closer I still can't tell, did you get the chrome valve cover bolts that have Ford embossed on the top ? that's what I have and I really like them but struggling to come up with a way to use them with the spark plug wire looms I got

yes i think so.. iam not sold on those cover bolts.. they are like studs then you put the chrome nuts on the studs.. I might pull them off and put something a bit more traditional on as i was a bit concerned about plug wire hold downs as well also they fit kind of poorly honestly...

That reminds me.. i need to order plug wires.. i keep forgetting. Kind of holding tight to see what the paint/body costs..

I dont have a set time on friday, i was thinking afternoon.. maybe lunch but if you want to come along i can work in a time.
