Any homebrewers or pilots out there?

Post by airbur »

I've noticed on other forums that certain hobbies and trades are common among the Bronco crowd. Not sure if it's been asked already but do we have any other homebrewers or pilots out there? I've been brewing for about 5 years and have been a pilot for around 20.

I have noticed A LOT of our guys have birthdays within the same 3 months, October to December. Reminds me of the story about how most major league hockey players are born between January and March. Something in the time of the year?

Also, it would seem we have a common thread in our spouses. Three nurses so far and another in medical related schooling.

And fun fact, my wife's name is Melanie and my middle name is Tyler. Starting to get creepy?

I am a member of the Home Brewers Association and read my Monthly Zymergy Magazine each month. Would love to start brewing my own beer sometime - maybe when my Bronco is drivable. I would love to try yours sometime.

Have you guys ever ventured over to BeerAdvocate.com? I've found some great recommendations over there concerning micros and what not. Don't recall if they have a homebrew section or not.

I'm a pilot, but haven't flown in over 10 years. I owned a Cherokee 235 for 12 years and finally got tired of the expense and sold it.

I wish this was another weekend:

Homebrewing 101: An Introduction to Making Your Own Beer # 6112F
Saturday, Dec 18 9:00a to 12:00p
at Colorado Free University, Denver, CO
Making your own premium beer is easier than you think at Colorado Free University. In Homebrewing 101, you'll learn the basics from an award winning brewer and beer judge with more than 20 years experience. You'll actually make a batch of beer during the workshop, taste home-brewed beers and get your share of the batch you make. www.freeu.com

Well, both of my parents are pilots and own a 56 Cesna 180. Gorgeous plane that was invited to be on display during the air show when they opend DIA. My dan is one of the first pilots to land at DIA and one of damn few private planes who ever have. His plane was on display right next to the B1 Bomber, and near the stealth bomber it was the first time that plane was on public display.

As far as beer, once you get more micro than Fat Tire, I generaly have no idea what you are talking about.

My wife is one of the nurses.

Oh, and my middle name is Jack.

I make a couple o' gallons a beer a year. I made a case of raspberry wheat for turkey day that was pretty damn good. I don't claim to be a big brew hobbyist by any means, but I like to make it.

Time for a hijack!
How many jumps have you got under your belt now?
Any good places to get started up there in Denver for a beginner? I've got 60 or so static lines under my belt (nothing higher than 1200') and would love to get in on the free fall game but at this point I'm a little old for work to consider sending me to school.

I might have been able to hit 200 but for two things: 1) if you haven't left the a/c by 9am in Colorado, you aren't jumping because the winds will be too high; and 2) frequent excursions to an arid and hostile environment.

And for what it's worth, I was hanging out the door of a Herc testing for PWAC nearly a decade ago.

Trust me, you can learn all you need to know from a good book and trial-by-fire. Sounds like a cool class though. Must be very condensed as 3 hours is barely enough time for the whole brewing process.

I like brewing, but I'm not much of a beer drinker so I give most of it all away. I recently built a kegerator out of a fridge that holds 10 gals of 2 different beers....have barely made a dent in either of them. The other pic is what happens when you try to use snow to chill the beer down to yeast-pitching temperature.....an entire batch gone:(

Nah, no worries. Sucks when mother nature winds up costing you 150 a month.

Airbur,
Sorry for the hijack. Damn it sure as hell looks as though homebrew has come a long way. I remember when they first started selling those little gallon plastic jobs you were supposed to mix up like seamonkeys and throw in your closet for a few weeks.

What types of beer do you brew? I was always quite partial to stouts. However, when I was in Alaska last I picked up a couple of growlers of an apple ale and I'll be damned if that wasn't one of the tastiest beverages I've ever had.

Would love to go skydiving though.

Yea...I was never a beer drinker before I discovered homebrewing. The array of different styles and types is amazing...you can really put anything you want in a beer recipe. Once you taste a good red, nut brown, or IPA, it's hard if not impossible to pick up a can of Coors. A lot of my friends are light american ale lager drinkers (Bud/Coors). I have a good time educating them that the Coors and Buds were brought about for the tastes of the female workforce during WWII.

I had a Holiday Amber Brew at Marco's Coal Pizza downtown with pecans and apricot - one of the best beers I have had all year. The Raspberry Wheat at My Brothers Bar is a close Second. Like aka stated - the Apple Ales are great but have so much dang sugar you are destined for a huge hangover.

Count me in for Skydiving anytime anyplace you guys put it together. Always wanted to do it but NEVER had anyone who dared to go with me. For those of you who have done it a bunch of times - let's have Airbur fly the plane - that would take it to the next level!

I need to do a recurrency jump anyway so I would be willing to go anytime. Might be a fun "non" bronco related day for CCB Members to hang out this summer. I know they give a discount for groups. If there is interest, when things warm up I'll set it up out at Mile High Skydiving in Longmont this spring. We could caravan down in the EBs and huck out of a plane! Good times icon biggin
