Bronco died on Highway 36... Help

Post by Stubborn3 »

So I was driving to work this evening when my truck lost power. Stepped on gas with no results and made my way to the side where the engine died. The auxiliary fan ceased to function and the electric fuel pump also quit, however the head lights and interior lights, gauges etc. still worked. turned key and started would turn over but no ignition occurred. Any idea on where to start? I was thinking coil maybe? Never had a vehicle power down while going 70 mph before. Any help would be appreciated.

You've got an electric fuel pump and an electric auxiliary fan, correct? Are they running off of relays? Where is the power that feeds those relays coming from? If your headlights are on, dash is lighting up, and the truck is turning over, it sounds like all of your stock, normal wiring stuff is working.

Might try jiggling that ignition key too. Sbolt19 was having issues with his truck dying while driving down the road. Turned out to be the ignition switch.

Don't sweat it. Gotta figure with ~40 year old trucks, got start from the first potential point of failure. And unfortunately for us, that is often the ignition switch.

Still better than the 2008 Hummer I traded in for it. I'll never have anything else again. Thanks again and hope to attend an event next time we have one.
