Manual to auto conversion

Postby akaFrankCastle » Mon Apr 01, 2013 8:09 pm

I might be putting the C4 I have in storage into the '72. But, I've got a question. When it comes to installing the flexplate, which is weighted (right?), how do I know what position the weight on the plate needs to be in? Seeing as I am not removing an existing flexplate, I have no point of reference. Or am I over thinking this?

It will only go on one way. The bolts / holes are not evenly spaced so that they will all only line up in one position.

Well that certainly makes things easier. Thanks. And if you do make it down to WH tomorrow, tell Jim and crew we all say hi from Colorado.

The weight is determined by the application, so for early 302 / 351 they are the same, and only the larger 11" torque converters are made now. Don't forget to pull the pilot bushing out of the crank before you try to mate the auto up. I've done 3 of these now so let me know if it want a hand.

Appreciate the offer Kinder. Still trying to make a decision and determine my short range work timelines. About the only things I lack now are the cooler lines and starter.

Just bend up some 5/16" hard lines in the longest length napa sells, they are almost perfect, one line will need an extra 12" section to mate to a stock radiator cooler.

I forgot this very important step 15yrs ago when I was doing a swap. It was a bad day. Couldn't get the engine trans to mate up and for the life of me couldn't figure out why. Friends dad stopped by and said, " you didn't pull the pilot bushing out did you" I replyed, " the what". Never make that mistake again.

Alternatively, you can use wheel bearing grease and have your son help you. That way when it squirts grease out and it gets in your son's hair he can go to bed and get grease all over his pillow case giving your wife a reason to be pissed at you for 2 days. Now I use petroleum jelly.
