Emission Inpsection on 76'?

Postby mdurbahn » Sat Nov 16, 2013 1:28 pm

I would like to remove the smog pump and all the other emission junk off my 76' EB. For a car this old do they only do the tail pipe emission check, or do they still do a visual inspection?

Thanks, Matt

You might want to rethink your plan.

Yes, they check.

Yup. Depending on the county they require smog pump, sealed gas cap and catalytic converter.

Did you recently get yours retested? If you did, how did it work out?

It depends on where you live. Most counties in Colorado do not have emissions requirements, but all the ones in the Denver area do. If you need to have your other vehicles smogged (I'm assuming you do, based on your question), then I wouldn't touch the emissions stuff.

My testing is due thus month, just haven't had time to do anything with it.

I will let you know how it goes and see if they are doing 5 years between instead of yearly.

ok just went and got my emission testing done and renewed my registration on the 76 bronco.

I now have 5 year collectors plates as vehicles 1981 and older now qualify - cost me $199 which is well worth it.

In order to qualify for the 5 year plates you will need an emissions test done in the last year...

BTW had to go to a new independent emission inspection place as Jerrys on Wadsworth is no longer in business.. The new place I went to on Federal didn't ask me one question except for what year the Bronco was. They look for the smog/air injection, cat and sealed gas cap.

This will be interesting for me.

I don't have a smog pump.

When I got my collector plates the first time, the CO clean air guy looked in a book and determined that it didn't come with one originally as the DSO didn't require one.

We'll see what happens.

Was excited to see my registration renewal notice in the mailbox today as it indicated EMISSION TEST NOT REQUIRED.

Tried to renew on line only to be told that Collector Plates aren't eligible.

Not saying anything, but when I lived in Abq, NM it was possible to pass emissions at a few places if you knew who to ask for. I bet there are a few places similar in Colorado.

Just saying......

Really in Denver there aren't. There are only a couple of independent inspection stations left. The rest are state run and good luck if they know a hole in the ground from an engine and what should be on it. Hopefully the independents will stay open for a while longer or at least until all classic broncos are close to except.

Take it to one of the independent tail pipe test shops. They rarely pop the hood.

Bronco Karma in full force today........

My renewal notice indicated that an emission test wasn't required but I couldn't renew on line when I tried.

I stopped by the DMV and they renewed it no questions asked. After I had the new tag and registration in hand, I asked if I was exempted because I drive by the road side sniffers so frequently. She responded that that they had decided to grandfather the valid plates back to the rules that were in place when the plates were issued.

I will now resume smiling for the rest of the day.

Arbitrary & random changes to regulations? Is Obama the Governor of Colorado now?

C'mon Gunni. They didn't make collector plates mandatory and then raise the prices by 300%.
