Oh crap - C4 has no park!

Postby hockeydad4-22 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 6:36 pm

With Viper hanging out in Cali playing beach blanket bingo with Gidget and various other surfer chicks, who is the resident c4 expert?

I took it upon myself to get busy putting Drews bronco back on the road so he can have some fun with it this summer before he ships out for boot camp in October (yeah, he went and joined the Marines) so last week I pulled the front sheet metal off allowing access to all the goodies under the hood, and today I started in on it. One of the complaints has been that park does not engage. I was thinking just like you all, linkage needs adjusted, but imagine my surprise when I discovered this is not the case, park does not work at all.

I'm sure Phil could come over, crawl underneath and wave his magic wand at her and she would be fixed, all before we eat dinner, but for me... The force is not quite that strong.

Ideas anyone?

I'm no expert but...

perhaps the spring on the parking paw has broken or come loose?

Ok, now I need someone who knows what Zach just said...

Can I repair/replace the spring and/or paw without taking the trans out?

So you completely removed the linkage, rotated the shift lever all the way and it didn't click into the park position? I know you can see the park paw and watch it work with the xfer case adapter removed, but I'm not sure if it's serviceable without further tearing in the trans.

I think you need to remove the governor and possibly also the distributor sleeve underneath to access the paw.

Ding, ding, ding. If the pawl arm is broken the only way to get to it is to remove the output shaft and distributor housing which is the last major thing to be removed from a C4. If luck is on your side there is a snap ring at the rear that could have come out and disconnected the rear cam from the linkage. You'll need to remove the tcase and adapter to test your luck.

Arrow points to snap ring. Tell Drew to quit putting it in PARK while moving.

I guess all of those C4 rebuild videos I've been watching during recovery are starting to pay off.
