Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
Wow, never really checked into this, last was the 1st year that I put non-licensed vehicle on the trails with a sticker and that was only because the dealer paid for it when I bought my boys some dirt bikes. I’m wondering how this is going to shake out and which roads/trails/areas will be “declared” as OHV routes and which won’t.
I’m with Zilla and questioning how the money will be used, I’m sure we could request a audit or report showing where the money has been going up to this point. Plus it looks like the enforcement piece will take a bit of time to get normalized.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
I don't mind if the money goes to trail maintenance and all, but with the FS starting to use the philosophy "It's closed unless marked open" there will be less trails/roads to four wheel. That means more money for fewer trails then the state will see that as a way to divert the funds to social programs.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
Whats up with the "recreation" part? So if I'm there giving paid guided tours I dont have to pay? ...another reason to bring a passanger?
(b) On and after January 1, 1991, the owner of every vehicle required to be registered pursuant to article 3 of title 42, C.R.S., and the owner or operator of every motor vehicle and off-highway vehicle from another state or country, when such vehicle is being used for recreational travel upon designated off-highway vehicle routes, shall obtain and display on such vehicle an off-highway use permit.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
Total and utter BS!! Money is short and they are looking for ways to get into our pockets once again! Spent wisely, there is already enough money to maintain these off-highway routes, but instead of being wise, they figure out another way to take more of your paycheck!
I don't like the idea of having to register ATV's, dirt bikes, etc, but I can see where since they are using the roads, they should help to pay for maintenance. What I don't agree with is making those of us who have plates on our rigs to pay AGAIN for a sticker to simply drive down a FS road. Hell, I take 3 of the 4 rigs I have offroad regularly, so while the $30 ($10 each right?) a year isn't a killer, it boils down to the principal for me!! What about my trailer and camper? Where does it end? They, being the govenrment, seem to think the people are a bottomless pit for their reckless spending and soon, very soon, that pit will dry up.
J.D.
Correction, it's $25.25 ea., so that's $75.75 a year and becomes more of a burden. I have also considered crashing some friends camping parties, but I could take my Ford Focus there. Then I would have to get a permit for it... asinine!

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
Good friend of mine bought a Razer 900 and they wouldn't give him OHV tags. Said they're too big and he'd have to go pay for full street plates. Then the DMV wanted him to put full lights/signals etc on it.

Thought that was the whole point of Polaris coming out with the Razor, a side by side that could go on quad tracks with an OHV sticker. At least that is what the guy at the Polaris dealer told me last summer.

So we are going wheeling next weekend (Labor Day MSV). Do you think we should get permits?

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
This means ill spend another 100 bucks over the outrageous prices for plates. What next make every road a toll road? Or charge us by the mile? Its getting too much.

I can only guess that the holiday weekend will bring out the enforcers, but I'd be willing to take a chance, just keep Rox in front of you so he can block

Rox, you bring up a big point tho. The promises of dedicated funds are rarely kept. We need to nail these guys to the wall and tell them how we want our money spent and if it isn't spent that way, what penalties there will be. These people work for us!! They need to stop acting like elitists.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
I just got back from a little trail ride up lefthand canyon and stopped to read the signs. That one still said "OHV Registration is not required for vehicles with current license plates". Doesn't seem consistant, but that will be my excuse "Mr. Forest Service Man".

I'll try to post from my phone. Where would we go to get permits? motorcross cycle or bicycle shop?

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
My local motorcycle shop is where I get the regular OHV sticker / reg for our dirt bikes, I'm wondering if they'll have the permits? I'll swing by sometime today and see what they say, I'd hate to get a ticket for my one day of wheeling for the entire year.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
It may be different in different parts of Colorado but if your vehicle is licensed and legal for the road then no OHV. Only non-licensed OHV's need the sticker.

All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV tags
My statements do not represent the state view, whew, now that that is out of the way.
I've been asking about this issue when I run into the OHV enforcement Rangers and they are very chill about it and use their professional discretion to enforce the law. "Mostly" they seem to be after the ATV, UTV, Dirt Bike and Buggy crowd, not after the plated street legal vehicles. These are the state Rangers, not the federal Forest Service folks.
The argument for the OHV tags are thus in my mind. Your license plate and associated fees fund roads, not trails, so if you pay up for the OHV tag it should be helping our trail system. I have no idea how the state is using these funds, I hope wisely.

I haven't seen or heard of anyone getting ticketed. We have a real "Tree Nazi" Forrest Service cop in the area. He's got a bad reputation for throwing the book at everyone. If he's not doing it, I doubt many are.

Re: All Vehicles on OHV trails are required to purchase OHV
Was driving back into CO on I-25 from WY yesterday and the first billboard about 200 yards into CO was a "Stay the Trail" sign that said, Register your vehicle and stay the trail. Had a picture of a Jeep and an ATV.
I had never even considered needing one for the Bronco... Hmm.
