EFI fuel system

Postby ZOSO » Thu Oct 01, 2015 6:34 am

Ok Im about ready to start gathering my fuel system parts. I have a few questions for the guru's.

Im going to use the factory explorer fuel rails. But they don't fit the 351w width. So that means I need to cut off the cross over hoses on the back. Look to be a factory push lock style. Any idea what hose I need to replace that with?

Im not going to switch tanks for now so I will be running a frame mounted pump(255lph) and was wondering if an accumulator was needed? I will be running a low pressure pump to feed said HP pump.

Next is fuel Lines. Was thinking about 3/8 supply and 5/16 return? Or should I step down to 5/16 supply? I know 3/8" is way over kill.

What fuel tank (s?) do you have now?

I've seen the regular aftermarket 23 gallon main tank modified for the Explorer in tank pump, and before that the Mustang pump.

From what I have seen, you have the stock fuel line size correct for the explore. That is what I am planning on using with the explorer 5.0 when I get some time to work on it again.

No idea on the hoses. You do want an accumulator. It'll help prevent starvation. 5/16 is likely fine, but there isn't really a reason to not do 3/8, other than the ease of bending the tubing. Unless you're using the factory fuel fittings and need flared hard line. Those might be 5/16, but I'll let digger chime in on that.

I went 3/8 main and 5/16 return. That is what was originally on the Explorer. I have a bunch of leftover of each if you are interested. You can also rent the flaring tools.

I have flare tools for 3/8th and 5/16th fuel push-to-connects.

I ran 3/8th send, 5/16th return, used factory regulator and filter.

I don't have an accumulator on mine and never had a problem... except the one time I went wheeling and forgot to fill my bronco up and climbed out of a steep gully, got into a precarious position and all the fuel was at the back of the tank.

But if you fill up before you tackle the tuff stuff you shouldn't have a problem.

1/4" EFI pressure rated fuel hose, 24" is usually enough to do both of them. Put double EFI style hose clamps on each end.

An accumulator is not needed. In some cases it can work out well, but isn't needed if you run a LP pusher pump IVO the tank. LP near the tank and a HP pusher closer to the engine will work just fine.

3/8 supply and 5/6 return is the stock setup.
