Ok I've pretty much decided my build. I've messed around with a lot of different numbers. If the current cam is easily tunable I plan to just keep it. Hoping by going to a 58cc head I can get to 9.5:1 comp. Going to

Another detail is oil pump drive shaft. Garry mentioned something like using a 351c or something. Just cause it was a little longer to reach fully into the cam position sensor.

I've got a good set of GT40 heads and am willing to do the building myself, so it'd just be the machine work on the bottom end and rebuild kit. After talking with Zac a little bit I'm starting to thing this is less expensive than I'd thought. Might do a complete drivetrain swap with my ZF to minimize down time once my rig is back on the road.
The expensive part is finding the lightning lower. But like phil said can range from a couple hundred to many thousands of dollars. Just look for a lower mile engine and look at the cylinders. You can hone it your self and re ring it easily.

Another question. What about 4r70w torque converter stall speed. I thought I read that the explorer is somewhere around 2250rpm while the truck converter is 1800rpm. Which is better suited for our mild applications?

The explorer converter is a high stall. I haven't seen the truck converter so I can't say what it is. I think the explorer converter is a better choice especially with a little more cam. With the torque converter lockup clutch you don't have to deal with the problems of running a high stall at cruising speeds. Best of both worlds.

Hey I was looking around and instead of using the crappy 351 truck lower and adapter from BC's this may be something to look into. Probably better power gains even running stock explorer stuff.

Don't do it, they are a PIA to seal and every time you need to tear anything apart you have twice as many gaskets to get set-up. Eric did this with his and had nothing but bad luck with them.

Firstly I misspoke, the injectors for the harness and ECM I plan to use are 17 lbs. EFI Guy assures me that they are capable of flowing enough fuel for a mild 351 like we are talking about.
This is the fuel pump I'm using now and plan to stick with. It max capacity is 90 psi so I'm good there as well. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aei-11140/overview/
I'm open to additional input now that I have corrected myself.

Rox I want a setup similar to yours with the 4R70W but I'm hoping with a 351W I don't need 4.88 gears for a daily with 35" tires. I'll pull a little power with vintage air, but I'm only gonna do mild wheeling and pass exploration around Ouray, Silverton, Durango, & Rico so I need it to be dailyable (is that a word?) more than offroad extreme.
Phil is there a specific cast series I should look for in the 4R70W? Better half is in parts and service so I can get stuff at a slightly better cost.....I hope. Building my stash so I can finally get Ole' Red over and meet y'all face to face finally!
Any 351W block will work but the late ones were made to accept roller cams. Look for F4TE block casting to find one of those in anything '94-'97.
I went with 4.88 gears in the new Bronco with 351W/4R70W. Tires will be no taller than 33" until I decide to cut it and buy a set of flares. That overdrive gear takes a big bite out of the rpm. 4.88 is same as 3.40 gears with a direct drive transmission. Would you ever run 35s with 3.40 gears?
Look for a '98 or newer 4R70W. they have some stronger internal parts.
Thank You! THANK YOU!! Makes it a lot easier when you know exactly what to look for! Glad my better half is head of parts & service at a dealership....too bad it's not Ford, but I have an outlet to parts yards! I was informed extra parts have to go to the barn because evidently the Mercedes can't survive winter outside.

I know I saw a diagram or picture a while back with bolt sizes.
I'll hunt around my computers to see if I saved it.

Are you referring to this picture?

It's on the tech write up on CB: http://classicbroncos.com/tech/explorer ... conversion
You can buy an aftermarket timing chain cover at any parts store. Finding one at a junk yard that doesn't have a bolt rusted out in it may be a challenge.
You can also buy kits for the bolts too: http://m.summitracing.com/parts/arp-454-1504

I think a few of them are used for the alternator bracket and power steering bracket. I didn't need all of them, but definitely used some of them...

Hey that engine looks familiar. You don't need any of the studs. The brackets bolt to the heads. Some of the studs are an odd length that you won't find bolts in.
