Dana 20 Rebuild - Assembly Tips/Tricks?

Postby cplynn » Sat Mar 05, 2016 10:16 am

I am attempting my first Dana 20 rebuild and I am at the point of reassembling it. Are there any tips, tricks or "gotchas" I should be aware of? I am familiar with the trick to getting the pressed bearings onto the output shafts. I have read about the tip to set a bearing preload on the rear output shaft, but I'm not sure I know how to go about setting a preload. I am also familiar with how to get the needle bearings to stay in place while placing the idler gear in. I know not to reuse the yoke nuts.

Is there anything I need to be aware of as far as the detent rod, ball and spring go? Anything else I should know? Greatly appreciate any help on this!

One thing I didn't know was to use a rtv or liquid gasket material on any bolt that goes into the inside of the D20. Basically if a bolt will see the internal oil, use an RTV on the threads to prevent leaks.
