Explorer -> Superduty power steering upgrade

Postby landshark » Fri Jan 27, 2017 6:17 pm

My explorer pump in the 76 is making the dreaded whining noise - seeing how I will be doing some work on the Bronco in the next week I will be adding the power steering pump to the list of things to fix.

I was thinking of doing the superduty upgrade and swapping the internals, has anyone done it? did it work well? I am running the stock 76 power steering box only at the moment, however i have a hankering to change the vacuum brakes to hydroboost here soon.

The upgrade I am thinking about doing is this one: http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showth ... 617&page=2

thoughts?

I have a spare exploder pump on the shelve as well.

Have been seriously considering it. Let me know if you want to knock out both pumps at the same time.

I've looked for better pump to fit in the explorer bracket. I think I have found a good candidate but it's still going to require some fabrication.

The pump is a ZF from a 2004 cummins 2500. The bolt pattern is the same and it puts the input and output in the same position. It needs a fitting made to hook up the suction hose and I don't know about shaft size and pulley fitment. I need to find a cheap used one to further explore the possibilities.

I think it would be more than enough pump if it would work. Those dodges had hydroboost and huge steering boxes.

I will look and see what I can find at the pull and pay. Maybe worth it to pick one up if it's not too much at the parts store.

They are expensive. I'd like to find a used one to test but those would be a rare find in a wrecking yard.

Pumps look to be the same price as the Super Duty ones at the auto parts stores - of course they are all re-mans...I might get one and see if it measures up and would work..
