Flutter on acceleration--fixed

I drive my (explorer swapped 5.0) Bronco nearly everyday and it started making a flutter sound (not ticking) coming home. It only happens during moderate to heavy acceleration. Maintaining a speed doesn't seem to recreate the sound. No engine light. I checked the headers and I didn't see any exhaust residue (yet) and the bolts were still tight. The only thing that changed were adding a 1/2 quart of oil (it was a little low).


Any ideas where to start?

When is last time you cleaned your maf sensor

I set the TPS at .96 a month ago
Cleaned the MAF about 2 months ago. I'll look again tonight.
I disconnected the battery last night to clear anything including my radio stations.

Hopefully you used MAF cleaner and not something like brake cleaner.

Try a new fuel filter.

Yeah I used MAF Cleaner although it was still really clean.

I changed the headers collector gasket last night because one bolt was loose. The gasket crumbled into pieces. I happened to have a spare. I put a bit of Copper RTV on it and put it back in. I'll test that when I get home. However, I'll pick up another fuel filter in case that doesn't fix it. This is what I usually put in every couple years:

Yup that collector gasket must have been it. Although having Moab Mikes girlfriend cross her legs probably helped too.

Nice easy fix! I just found the rear most bolts on my headers had worked loose as well so tightened those up and the engine sounds so much better. Curious why that happened and if I was supposed to loctite those bolts?

I've just tightened them ocassionally. Red loctite might handle the temps, but I don't want to deal with having to warm it up to loosen the bolts.

For headers you just have to keep checking until they stay tight. Took 2-3 times for mine over several months.
