Power steering pump and hydroboost
So, I picked up an Astro HB unit at the swap meet so instead of just replacing my bad master cylinder, I want to just go to the HB setup. I have the T-bird front discs with drum in the back (for now, have the Explorer disc stuff waiting to swap in).
I have the stock power steering pump and box. Thanks to Digger, I know all of the adapters I need to go to AN -6 fittings except for the Power Steering pump.
After reading a ton, it sounds like the stock power steering pump shouldn't be used for hydroboost and power steering. I haven't had any issues with the power steering outside of the box leaking and I just re-sealed it this past winter. I'm running 33x10.50 tires.
Do I need to bite the bullet and upgrade my pump? I have all of the Explorer serp stuff waiting to go on the 351w that's sitting on a stand (notice a theme?) and that includes the Explorer power steering pump. I don't think I can use this on my existing setup. I just don't want to spend extra dollars I don't need to right now.
Thanks for the advice. I've done a ton of searches and come up with great info but just need some thoughts on this last piece of the puzzle.

I can't say if the Explorer PS pump will work with HB. But here is some info for the -6an fitting to adapt to the Explorer pump, if that's the way you go. I found this info because it happens to be the same fitting that works in my Mustang HB inlet.

I found a similar fitting from Speedway on Ebay pretty cheap, just doesn't have the captured oring/washer like the WH version. I haven't fired it up yet, so I'm not sure if it seals. But finding a new oring/washer won't be hard to replace it.

Yeah, if I was running the Explorer serp setup, the power steering pump adapter is easy. My questions are:
1. Can I use the stock Bronco power steering pump? If so, is there an adapter to AN -6? Or do I need a custom hose made?
2. If I can't use the stock Bronco pump, can I adapt the Explorer pump onto my stock 302 motor for the time being? Would it just need a bracket to adapt it?
3. If I can't use the Explorer one, I can go to the Saginaw canned ham one. If I do, I'm thinking I should just buy a bracket from one of the vendors. Is one better than the other knowing that I will eventually move to a 351w?
Lot's of questions I know but trying to keep the cost down at this point but want it back on the road. :)

Wow, I got that all wrong. Sorry.
I doubt the stock Bronco pump would keep up, but don't know for sure. I haven't seen anyone put an Explorer pump on a v-belt set up.
WH's 302 Sag bracket says to add an adapter for a 351.
https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/S ... ring_Pumps
Tom's sells totally different brackets for a 302 than a 351. So, I guess you'd have to buy a 2nd bracket and an adapter.
https://www.tomsbroncoparts.com/product ... p-only-new
I have an old Toms bracket on my 74, and a WH bracket waiting to put on my 72 someday. The WH one is better built, and plated if that makes a difference. I don't know about any of the other company's stuff.
Why not switch to the Explorer stuff now and avoid messing with the Saginaw stuff? Looks like the WH Explorer Sag bracket doesn't work with the 351s, so you'll end up with the Explorer pump eventually anyways.

Re: Power steering pump and hydroboost
I highly doubt the stock pump will keep up with hydroboost and steering. The explorer pump can keep up. I havent had any issues with mine. If you add a sag pump now you can get the bracket and pulley from WH and use it on the explorer setup later. It will fit a 351 with some spacers/shims. Eck has done that with his.

Number one reason, I'm trying to put as little in to getting this thing back on the road as possible right now. My hope is to just build the 351w and put all of the Explorer stuff on it and then put it in the truck. It would be a lot less time to just put the Saginaw in and if I can re-use it with the 351w, it's probably a break-even deal in the end.

Yeah, that was my fear that it wouldn't keep up. I'll probably bite the bullet and pick up the bracket from Wild Horses. It will ultimately make life a lot easier for just $60 more. Maybe I'll go hit the yards on Wednesday to see if I can find a good pump vs paying full price for a new one.
Thanks as always for helping me spend my Bronco money! :)

Don't waste your money on the Saginaw conversion parts. Try the explorer pump. Sometimes they work pretty good. If it doesn't, I can get you a pump that fits in the explorer bracket and will work well.

Re: Power steering pump and hydroboost
Hmm. But I can't use the explorer pump with the v-belt setup right? If that's the case, I'll just put the hydroboost on the shelf till I I have the 351w ready. It just stinks cause I need to replace my master cylinder and I was hoping to just skip replacing it with something I'll pull out in less than a year (ideally).Viperwolf1 wrote:Don't waste your money on the Saginaw conversion parts. No. You have to use all explorer parts. Why do you want v belts? Explorer works on 302 or 351w.

Re: Power steering pump and hydroboost
Mainly because I don't want to mess with the current engine. It runs well enough that when I get the last body panel done, I can drive it while I rebuild the 351w.Viperwolf1 wrote:No. You have to use all explorer parts. Why do you want v belts? Explorer works on 302 or 351w.
I can just replace the master cylinder and keep the hydroboost on the shelf till I swap the engine.
