Mildly built 351W, F4TE Roller Block

Post by Digger »

I'm putting a feeler out there, judging interest in this engine.

- 1994 T4FE 351W roller block bored .030 over
- Original crate engine built by Detroit Competition Engineering in late 2009, ~25k-30k miles
- 9:1 compression
- 4340 I-beam rods and forged pistons, ARP hardware
- SFI 28oz flywheel and balancer
- ProComp SBF 210 aluminum heads
- CompCams 35-329-8 roller cam. (est 350HP @ 5000 rpm / 425 lbft @ 3500 rpm) [I also have the higher HP/higher RPM TrickFlow cam available as well] installed recently
- CompCams timing chain (installed recently)
- 1.6:1 CompCams roller rockers, ARP studs and guide plates
- MSD distributor and wiring
- Aluminum tall valve covers
- High flow water pump
- Miloden 7qt oil pan
- Choice of Weiand Stealth or Edelbrock Torker II (new) intake. (Intake currently removed)
- V-belt front dress with 130 amp 3G alternator and Saginaw P-pump

Other stuff that can be included:
- 36-1 crank wheel and 3.0l VR sensor with custom brackets
- 1000 CFM FAST 4150 EFI throttle body
- pre-wired Megasquirt EFI

I have $7100 in receipts. Asking $3000, but I'm not sure what the going rate is for a used crate engine, so I'm open to offers.

This was my thought too. Agree with Chris that this is a good price. Too bad I've already started my motor build.

The main reason is I want to drive the Bronco more. When I had my Ranger, it was my wheeling rig and my daily driver. It made 18-21 mpg with the V6. The 351 in the Bronco is lots of fun, but it only made 10 mpg when I bought it and around 14 mpg average with fuel injection. Even with a 23 gallon tank, driving range is limited, especially when towing and it's hard to justify burning that much fuel every week when I have more efficient vehicles to choose from.

My long term plan has always been to drop in a small turbo diesel. I hit a breaking point the other day with the current setup when I looked at the list of things I still want to upgrade, like serpentine belt drive, catalytic converter, intake air box etc. And, in full disclosure, the engine has always burn a little bit of oil like most older engines. I put up with Misty's '69 Fairlane doing the same thing, we only drive it 100-200 miles/year, but when driving 15,000 miles / year, it wears on me, along with the little annoyances, like how difficult changing oil is due to drain plug and filter locations.

I've run the numbers and looked at the CAD packaging. It makes sense from a financial and practical usage standpoint, so it looks like I'm pulling the trigger on this swap.

I don't want to derail your FOR SALE thread here, but I am certainly intrigued in what you have in mind for the diesel conversion. 2.8 Cummins?
1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.

Well, I was keeping quiet about it until I was further down the line, but yes, I spent some time looking it over at SEMA and Cummins released an updated engine cal that bumps the torque over 300 lbft. The biggest issue is there are no adapters for a ZF5, so Im stuck making one.

Mileage potential is over 20 mpg and I've spent too much time drooling over Kirk's drivetrain. A big bonus is I shouldnt have to regear with the R2.8 since my gears lean towards the economy side.

I'm sorry. Didn't mean to let you cat out of his bag...

But I am so excited to a) have another diesel conversion to drool over, and b) a R2.8 in an EB!!!!!!!

Adapter? pfffttt a walk in the park for a fella like yourself!
