Roll Bar / Cage

Missing that critical piece to your build or resto?

Roll Bar / Cage

Postby rt9 » Tue Mar 26, 2019 12:08 pm

I'm looking to increase the safety on my ride and would like to hear some thoughts on roll bars and cages.

I've gone back to the full cab and would like to keep the original bulkhead (I understand this can cause issues with some systems). A main loop is the obvious place to start looking, but I do like the idea of something up front as well. I doubt the windshield frame has much structural support.

The budget is kind tight but I do want to drive it topless some this summer.

Thoughts?

Rick

When you say "full cab", you mean wagon top? And "bulkhead" meaning a half-cab bulkhead? Sry, I can't remember your rig that well.

Yes, the windshield frame isn't much for structure.

How far behind the door post does the bulkhead go? I can measure mine when I get home Friday to see if there is clearance.

Yep - going back to a full wagon model as it came from factory. Here's a couple pictures of it in the original condition (2009ish). I'll try and get a measurement or a close up of the bulk head later tonight.

Not a lot of room. TBP will make their half cab bar shorter to fit under the top. But I kinda wanted to kick it off everyone first. See if there were other ideas. Plus, freight on a roll bar is probably pretty expensive. I got a buddy who's son is an amazing welder that can assemble it for beer and food.ImageImageImage

I bet mine would fit in its original state before I had the seats mounts added.

Does it but up against the wheel well ? I've seen ones like that and ones right behind the seat.

Normal legs for the A and C pillars, B pillar is this hoop that runs right in front of the wheel wells.

Don’t freak out Rox, I didn’t paint mine, this is a pic of someone else’s.

That is nice. Who makes that?

Are there any local places that do this kind of thing? My guess is the old school roll bars won't fit with the bulkhead.

It’s a Bailie Bilt family cage. I like it.

Bronco Hut sells the Proto Fab cage, think they usually keep some in stock. Not sure how that would work with the bulkhead though, mine sat pretty close to the wheel well.

To clear the bulk head look into the 1/2 cab cages. Mine is from Extreme custom fabrication. The main hoop is in front of the bulk head. It was a kit with a lot of fitting and bad words. I will get some pictures later to day.

Here are some pics of the proto-fab cage behind the front seats. Not quite sure where the bulkhead goes but might give you an idea.

B.O.B. - thanks. Your right in that it's close. I took a 2" bar a held it level against the top of the bulkhead. You can see the lower part will interfere with the wheel well. Image

Here are the promised pictures. You can see how the back bars parallel the bulk head.

That is really nice. Wonder if that will work with the bench seat? I'll call them and protofab today. There is also a place in Colorado Springs I'll call.

Bailie Bilt makes one similar if you don’t want to weld it yourself. Gordon will also tweak any of them to your needs.
