Eyebrows for Stubby

Post by casadejohnson »

Check out what we found for the stub today! Went down and picked it up this morning. ItΓÇÖs going to require a little love before it goes on but it will be nice to have the correct grill. ImageImageImage

Nice find! fire fire

Overall good condition. Looks like original paint. There is difference where the color/white breaks compared to the later grills.

It was actually on CraigΓÇÖs list. IΓÇÖm not sure that the guy selling it knew that it was anything special. It was posted for half a day already before we noticed it was an eyebrow grill and called. Honestly I was surprised nobody snatched it before we got to it.
I would like to bang out the worst of the dents and try to paint some blue over the red before trying my hand at some artificial patina to match the rest of the bronco. If it all goes to plan we can move the current grill on the 66 over to the kids bronco project.

What good luck! I would have had a nervous breakdown until I had it in my hands. Between the bench seat & this grill, Bronco karma is working to put Stubby back to it's 66 glory!

I was a little worried about it so tried to go down and get it on Saturday night. The seller wanted to wait till morning so we got up at the butt crack of dawn and made the 97 mile trip down. Strangely, I donΓÇÖt think he had any other calls on it. I bet if it had ΓÇ£eyebrow grillΓÇ¥ in the title his phone would have been ringing non stop. IΓÇÖm just glad to have the last major piece of the 66 puzzle. A set of 66 caps would be cool but I would be too chicken crap to drive around with them on!

Check out Kirk's poverty caps. 52/53 Merc hub caps. I paid about $75 for a set of 4.

Just for my education, the "Eyebrow" grills are those that have the raised ridge [O##O] outboard of the headlights?

Either way, cool to see OE stuff going back on!

I have seen kirks Merc caps. A quick eBay look shows a couple sets ranging from $200 to $300

Correct, early 66 only. If you look at the photo I posted of the red grill, you can see the detail. ΓÇ£ eyebrow ΓÇ£ is really not a very good description of the detail as it actually starts above the headlight and runs down the side of the grill where the paint color break is and then comes back out under the headlight. Basically, it makes a big ΓÇ£cΓÇ¥ shape around the light.

I saw that when I went to look at what I paid. I don't know how the condition compares, but I'd just keep an eye out and grab a cheap set when they pop up.

I could be wrong but I think these are what heΓÇÖs talking about ...

Top 2 hubcaps in 1st 2 pics are OEM Ford.

The rest of these are all Merck hubcaps, the front has been painted with black stripes and cut for the front hub. The way you tell is the clips on the back. Ford only has three and then a space three and then a space mercury ones have clips all the way around...

Someone on eBay trying to fake the fronts for $100 each, or $150 for 2... Better than a Grand I guess!

(I just read the guys add...He represents them as "clones")

After acquiring my long sought after eyebrow grill, I had to figure out how to make this original red paint grill look like it belonged on my mostly blue with rusty patina bronco. I didnΓÇÖt want to loose the patina of the grill either so I broke out a few cans of spray paint, some sand paper and some brake cleaner. A short time later it looked like it had been on the bronco for years.

Phil, Kevin, and I were checking out one of the local junk yards this weekend and found a set of Mercury caps still on the original Vehicle. $60 and a 3 1/2ΓÇ¥ hole saw later, the stub is sporting a set of faux 66 caps. IΓÇÖm really liking the new look!

I figured they would want a lot of money for them so I didnΓÇÖt even pull them off right away. I took the photos so I could get a price when we went back to the office. I was pleasantly surprised when he told me $15 each. IΓÇÖm betting there are some Mercury guys that would not be very happy with me cutting out the centers for the fronts!

What about a 3.5ΓÇ¥ solid round cylinder in a 20 ton press...squash that little merc Head flat then put on the F O R D in the middles? LOL... playing devils advocate!
IΓÇÖve seen on the Broncitis (?) site where he sells the hubcap stripes and FORD lettering....

Seems the Merc guys shouldΓÇÖve gotten there first if they didnΓÇÖt want you adopting the hubcaps.
