Post by Backcountryrenegade »

If I remember correctly, there are 6 bolts that actually hold the bell housing to the engine then two that are lower down that hold the plate to the bell housing.

Only advise is go slow and take your time. If you have a load leveler it is much easier than just bolting a chain to the block.

Good luck! If you weren't so far away I'd come help.

They are paired. Should be pretty close to the same spot on either side. Could be you lost one along the way.

If you have the engine mounts loose, you should be able to move the engine back and forth to separate them some. That might help you find the last one.

This motor will not budge. I donΓÇÖt know what IΓÇÖm missing. Everything is disconnected but when I put pressure on the motor with a floor jack or hoist the whole front of the Bronco comes up. Anybody near elizabeth could come have a quick look? I know IΓÇÖm out here.

You did pull the engine mounts right? Wondering if they are getting hung up. Also make sure you have something to support the bell housing.

X2 ,ive used a ratchet strap around the frame rails and hooked to itself to hold the front of the transmission up. Floor jack works too.

Now how the F do you get the new one in straight?

Oh- wtf is the donut on the flywheel and how the hell do you pull it to put it on the other motor?

The torq converter will be bolted with 5-5/8ΓÇ¥bolts I think, and you can get to them from the engine side of the fly wheel. Using a ratchet wrench makes it a little easier since there isnΓÇÖt much room. Good luck!

Good stuff. I didn't think about it being an auto. If you don't have one, a Chilton's manual goes a long way in helping with this stuff. It should be straight forward but having a manual had helped me in more than one occasion.

Confused hereguys. DoesnΓÇÖt look like the 351 has room for the harmonic balancer? Do I need to pull the timing chain cover off the 302 and use it?

302 removal

Yes, the same torque converter can be used for both engines, youΓÇÖll need to confirm the 351 has the same flex plate as the 302. If itΓÇÖs different swap it out as well. The 351 harmonic balancer is likely the truck version and has a different depth and bolt configuration, swap the 302 balancer & the rest of the accessory pulleys over as well. YouΓÇÖll likely need to add the 351 accessory adapters to make the mounts line up. A quick google for the accessory adapters will show you a pic of what IΓÇÖm taking about. All of this swapping can happen because the 351 and 302 have the same engine imbalance of 28oz.

Edit. The top pic w/ the blue engine still has the harmonic balancer on the engine. The timing covers are the same or nearly so, they shouldnΓÇÖt need to be swapped. Pull everything off the front of the crank until only the crank snout shows with the key way then proceed to swap parts.

OK so smart guy here didnΓÇÖt take a picture before I got into tearing stuff down. Couple issues- I donΓÇÖt remember which brackets are which. Also- the crank pulley on the 302 has 3 bolts- the 351W has 4? Crank pulls I took off is bigger than the 302 one.

Also- laugh away, I know but the new water pump has a plate on the back out of the box. Does that stay or get removed?

Lastly (For now) the intake on the 351 for the upper radiator hose seems to be missing an assembly of some kind that sits on the front of the intake- does the assembly from the 302 go on it or do I need a part?

The 351 is slightly wider (at the top) than the 289/302 blocks so different accessory brackets or adapters will be needed which is what kinder was mentioning.

Missed that- swapped out the balancer. So how does one remove a torque converter?

The torque converter has 4 studs on it which go through the flex plate and are held on by nuts. So you just remove those 4 nuts and it will come off (and spill 9000 quarts of trans fluid on your floor).

If you left the torque converter attached to the engine while removing it, that probably explains why you had such a difficult time.

Normal practice is to detach the torque converter from the flex plate and leave it engaged in the transmission by elevating the front of the trans up so gravity keeps it in the pump.

You may have damaged the pump seal if you left the torque converter on the engine during removal.

Shaft. Never done this before- how does one tell if I damaged it? Whats the replacement protocol?

How do you access the studs? I canΓÇÖt see them?

The best way to access the nuts holding the torque converter on is to rotate the crankshaft by hand until one of the nuts is is in the 6 oΓÇÖclock position. With the motor out, and the balancer / pulley already off, You will have to hold the block still and rotate the flex plate. You may want to remove a couple of spark plugs to make it easier to rotate.

Maybe Viperwolf will chime in cuz he is the expert on transmissions............

I think you see / feel the seal to see if it is damaged.

The seal is probably less likely to get damaged because the stator support would have kept the converter snout straight when it was being pulled out. But if the converter snout is worn and rough it could have damaged the seal. If in doubt change it. I'd really be more worried about breaking the stator support off or bending the input shaft when pulling the engine with the converter.

Ok what am I missing? These brackets donΓÇÖt line up with the adapter for the alternator. I figured out the power steering relocation but the alternator not so much. ImageImage
