I've been thinking of different engine swaps lately... And since I bleed diesel, I think the same engine that is in my wife's X5 would be awesome! I think the 3.5l inline 6 would fit fine, but I am not sure how large the 8spd auto is. But it would make a great package!! Quiet, plenty of power, diesel, but wow it would take someone with a lot of know-how to pull it off!

I'm curious to see how the recent crop of small v6 diesels in the grand Cherokee and Nissan pickups looks once they get old enough to start turning up in junkyards. If the engine management can get figured out they could be a great option.

Yes, and I think they would have plenty of punch to deliver the power! My dream would be a LUBR with a nice diesel in it so I could DD it!

Didn't someone say the 5.0L Cummins V8 was being used in boats already?

Engine management would seem well on the way.

That newfangled diesel stuff is expensive. How about just turbocharged V8?

Nice! I'd really like to do it with the newer 3V motors and the 5 speed auto. But... It looks like those started in 05, and my V10 support ends in 04 right now. Might have to just run a huffer and a 4r100 to make me feel better. That, or spend a small fortune getting the software developed. That swap will be down the road though, I just need it running well for now.

How fluent is your German? I have some engineering level stuff for BMW but never played with it much because most of it is in German. No idea if it would make a swap like that possible.

casadejohnson wrote:You should make a list of stuff your looking for / need and post it up. I bet our collective parts hoards can supply some of what you need and save you a few $

I'll put a list of stuff I'm looking for together soon. Once I hear it run I'll have a better idea of which direction I'll go with it. I'm thinking about picking up a donor Explorer this weekend also, but logistics have me on the fence about it. I want the 4r70w and front dress for sure, but I don't know if I'll want the engine yet. I'm not sure I want to drag it home and butcher it in the driveway to salvage the drivetrain when I could probably piece a lot of the needed parts together for less hassle.

Right now I know I need a windshield and a hinge. Phil mentioned changing the front steering components for a different TRE design, not sure what I need there yet. I'm also not sure if I should save this hood or look for another, same with the grill.

When you say you need a windshield, are you talking about glass or frame? I thought the other frame that came with it looked to be pretty good. Windshield glass is over rated anyway. The glass in my 66 has been broken for 7-8 years now.

Uhhh - it's not... slap

The BMW 3.5d generates 282 HP and 428 ft/lbs @ 1750rpm. the X5 achieves 0-60 in 6.6 seconds

The 3.0l ecodiesel is 240 HP and 420 ft/lbs @ 2000rpm. The Grand Cherokee does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds.

Ford will be introducing their own 3.0l diesel soon.

So, my plan was to make it run this weekend. I got close but still failed.
Turns out I don't have a starter that will fit this old 3 speed. I really don't want to buy one considering this trans is going away whether the engine is good or not. So, I'll add that to the tenative list. Anyone have one I can borrow?

While investigating the starter dilema I noticed that the bolt holes for the starter are partially blocked by the block plate (pun intended). It would seem to me that the only way that could happen is if this engine and trans got mated up without dowels in place. I thought about correcting it with the plasma or a grinder, but I'll probably just loosen the bell housing bolts enough to correct it. I also hooked up the shifter linkage to take it out of reverse and discovered that I can't shift it. I don't know if it's a linkage or trans problem yet. But if it's the latter then that pesky block plate will come all the way out.

My last dilemma is my exhaust. I got one side all done and welded up. Got the other side all mocked up...and then my welder decided it no longer wants to feed wire at all. rant

All in all, progress was slow but could have been worse. It shouldn't be too much longer before if fires off at least.

Glass only. That other frame is good, but I think someone said the hinge was bad. I haven't really looked myself.

It may be that the bell and plate are for two different size flywheels. One for 164 tooth and one for 157. Bolt holes (except starter) and dowel holes will match but starter is in different location.

I think I have an extra manual starter laying around if you need it. I also have a spare 3 speed still under Bronco #2 if it comes to that. I'm sure someone has one just laying around.

Seriously dude? That is embarrassing.

And Gary, if you want windshield glass - let me know. If you gather up Justin's, blow the dust off and I will come over and install it.

Well, I came home tonight to a functional welder. Wire speed wasn't consistent, which made for some sloppy welds but I got it done. I'm pretty sure I know what's wrong with it. 3 chips on the main board are prone to failure and sensitive to heat. I can buy them for about $20, but they would be a royal pain to solder in. Or, I can buy a new board for $250. I'm not really sure I want to dump that kind of coin into this thing. It seems the money would be better spent on upgrading to something 220v. Either way I need to do something, a Bronco project without a working welder just isn't right.

I'm pretty well covered on 3 speeds too. This Bronco came with 3 of them. I think it was probably worked into the deal that we would dispose of them. =) If it comes down to it I'll toss the T-case in neutral just to hear it run. Then I'll find a 4r70w to put in. No sense in removing a 3 speed to put another 3 speed in.

I don't think that's the case. It's only off by 1/16" to 1/8". The lower hole at the front of the block plate is off by the same amount. I would think the wrong plate would be off by more, but then again I've never really compared the 2.

I will definitely be taking one of you two up on that! I assume I should get the window frame painted beforehand, right?

I think you're the closest to me with a starter, any chance I could swing by after work Tuesday or Thursday? If not I can holler at Jay.
